2091 C.E.
Red City, Cascadia
New Territories of America

Chapter 1

“Yer askin’ fer trouble, my friend!”

Adam looked across the picking line to Reg. “What do you mean?”

Reg snorted a laugh and shook his head. He snagged a soup can out of the trash conveyor chugging between them then threw it into the proper chute that sucked it away deep into the bowels of the Red City Recycling District, or Trashtown, as it was commonly known.

A grizzled veteran of the 2nd Civil War, Reg fought for the Loyalist Army until an IED blew off his leg. He’d spent some time in the Freelands before coming to Red City.
His was a familiar story, one that echoed Adam’s own with the exception that Reg was human infantry and Adam was a MECH (Mechanically Enhanced Cybernetic Human) his augments implanted by the megacorp MECHtech.

MECHtech recruited and augmented cybersoldiers; they were then leased to territorial governments, security firms, and the oligarchs that ruled most of the large cities in the NTA. Adam was the only surviving member of a six-member MECH crew from Cascadia in the Pacific Northwest.

“Big trouble,” Reg grinned.

Adam glowered at Reg and reached for a scrap of steel feeling the tingle in his augmented right arm as he switched the magnetic polarity to attract. The scrap flew into Adam’s hand and he pitched it down the chute.

Reg hooked a thumb over his shoulder. “I don’t even have to look to know who yer gawking at.”

Adam felt his face flush. “Oh yeah?”

Reg placed his fingertips to his forehead and closed his eyes, feigning deep concentration. “Let me see…Yeah…wait! Curly hair the color of a bright penny, sweet face sprinkled with freckles, big brown eyes…”

Adam rolled his eyes, picking another piece of metal from the line. Her hair was more a dark auburn, he thought, glancing again to where the girl sat waiting outside Belikov’s office.

She’d been coming out to Trashtown for the last few weeks. A runner for Tower Control, Adam guessed she was shuttling messages about the increased power needed for the big summit between the Lóng Sang clan who ran Red City and the Golden Triad who controlled the bay area.

A treaty would reopen the I-5 trade route. It would be good for business, and Caleb Masters, the new Dragon of Lóng Sang, was all about business. His predecessor, Vladimir Zoeng, was the one who swooped in and freed Red City from the grip of the tyrant, William LeBlanc.

White Willie, as he was called in the famous ballad penned in honor of his gory demise, turned Red City into a metropolis of violence. Drug dens, murder, and brothels had been the gross domestic product all of which lined the pockets of White Willie and his soldiers. Terrorized and desperate, the citizens had all but handed Red City to the Lóng Sang clan.

There was going to be an epic party at the Tower that night to welcome the delegation of Triads, thus the need for the extra juice. Trashtown was the place where Red City sent their waste but also where power was produced. Generators fed by steam from burning and hydroelectric from the river were all processed and maintained by the district.

“Zoom that bionic peeper ah yers on her ear, my man,” Reg said. Adam complied, his left eye reacquiring his plotted target and focused on the girl’s right ear. “Ya got a lock, dude?”

His Tactical Operations System woke up and processed the information—

SUBJECT: “TOWER GIRL”
DRAGON TATTOO SCAPHA OF RIGHT EAR
LÓNG SANG OFILLIATION MARKING
RED COLORATION INDICATES HIGH RANKING OFFILATE OR RELATIONSHIP TO HIGH RANKING OFFILIATE OF LÓNG SANG CLAN.

—It informed him cheerfully, dashing his hopes.

“Ya see what I mean?” Reg asked him. “Capitol T for Tower, and trouble.”

Adam shrugged. “There’s no harm in looking.”

“I wouldn’t even do that! Ya could wake up with yer nads in yer mouth!”

It was true; the aristocratic Lóng Sang did not mix with the common folks of Red City.

“Hey Grandpa! Back to work!” Belikov had come out of his office and was handing the girl her message. “You too Void-o!” he sneered.

The girl’s head whipped around and she looked right at Adam. He ducked his head avoiding her stare. His face turned scarlet with embarrassment.

A MECH’s memories were erased during the augmentation process. It made their insertion into the military hive mind easier and therefore a more stable product. Upon waking from the procedure he’d been void, who he’d been before was gone. From that day on he was MECH5030624.

Decommissioned now, folks were wary of a MECH like Adam. Unplugged from corporate control the general feeling was he might be a literal loose cannon, a weapon without a master. They were wrong of course but he wasn’t going to try to change anyone’s mind. He liked being left alone and was content to keep it that way, but the girl’s startled look made him want to shrink until he disappeared.

“Gǒuzǎi zi,” Reg whispered.

TOS translated: DOG WHELP!

Adam’s lips twitched in a near smile. He didn’t have many friends but Adam counted Reg among them. Slinging another chunk of scrap into the chute, he ventured a peek back up to the office. The girl was gone. He pushed away the disappointment he felt. Reg was right, he was just asking for trouble.

The Ballad of William LeBlanc

White Willie, White Willie, was king of Red Town.
White Willie, White Willie, he choked it all down.

His boys they went smashing and grabbing, it’s true!
The poor folk of Red Town knew not what to do.

The Dragons they came.
Lóng Sang was their name.
They looked and they saw all of Red Towns’ bleak shame.

The battle was gory, White’s boys they were sorry,
The Dragon had upset their claim.
They fled to the gutters and took as their brothers the rats, and the scraps, and the pain.

White Willie was down; he was broken and bound,
He begged and he pleaded and cried.

The Dragon he laughed,
“It’s too late, that’s all past. You should have been keen to comply.”

The Dragon was clear.
He’d come to change fear.
The folk, they all gathered around.
He steadied his blade, then gave a big wave and lopped off old King Willie’s crown.

The tyrant was dead.
They awoke from their dread.
Red Town had come back and it’s said,
The city was born and from then evermore you’ll look and the Tower shines red.

Come back tomorrow to read Chapter 1 of DRAGON’S PAWN!

The cover for my new release DRAGON’S PAWN has been ready for a long time and I’ve been just busting to show it off!

The story is a departure for me. It doesn’t have faeries or magic or wild journeys through the nine circles of Hell. It’s more what the big kids call speculative fiction, with a hard lean into cyberpunk. Think Blade Runner or Altered Carbon or Battle Angel Alita. It’s also a standalone novel and not part of any series.

That said, OF COURSE there is a romantic story line…I mean it is a book by me, right? 🙂

Okay, enough jabber jawing…
(drum roll)

Here’s what the story is about:

Adam wants nothing more than to live a life of quiet solitude, something that’s easy to do in the Trashtown District of Red City. An ex-MECH soldier, he keeps his head down and his mouth shut. Slowly, he’s starting to put the horrors of the battlefield behind him. And then he meets Mia.

The spirited messenger who runs for Lóng Sang more than intrigues him. As they grow closer he feels, with her, he’s found a place to trust his weary heart.

Mia’s time as a humble messenger for Lóng Sang is running out. Like her mother before her, soon she will take her place as a courtesan along side the Glitter Girls and Party Boys of the Tower. Her training has already begun and Caleb Masters, the devious oligarch who is Dragon of Lóng Sang, has taken a keen interest in her.

Mia knows too well what will happen if she and Adam are caught together so she cherishes their stolen moments while hiding her true identity from him.

She’s playing a dangerous game, one she has no hope of winning especially when she finds herself drawn into a conspiracy that threatens to tear Red City apart.

Not  your typical beach blanket read, however, I did read it when I was in Maui and loved every word! Equal parts hilarious and heart warming, Kings of the Wyld is a treat! I’ve already fancast all the members of Saga for the inevitable movie. 🙂

Clay Cooper and his band were once the best of the best, the most feared and renowned crew of mercenaries this side of the Heartwyld.

Their glory days long past, the mercs have grown apart and grown old, fat, drunk, or a combination of the three. Then an ex-bandmate turns up at Clay’s door with a plea for help–the kind of mission that only the very brave or the very stupid would sign up for.

It’s time to get the band back together.

Sangria time!

A post shared by Kathleen Rear (@kathleenrear) on

Oregon summer is sangria time! I make this every year to rave reviews. The secret is brandy instead of vodka!

Red Wine Sangria
2 cups sliced fruit (I use: lemon, lime, orange, strawberries)
3 tablespoons Sugar
1 cup Brandy
2 bottles Red Wine
(I prefer a mid priced brand preferably from the Willamette Valley)
4 cups Ice cubes

Place the fruit, sugar and brandy in a 2-3 quart container. Refrigerate overnight.
To serve, add the wine and stir to combine. Add the ice! Serve very cold.

Cheers!
Happy Summer!

This drink is pretty strong, I serve it in an 8oz cup. Any bigger and the drink gets warm before your guest is finished.

This is a very simple summertime salad staple. A refreshing cool side for grilled meats and the perfect thing to take to a party.

French Carrot Salad

5 large Carrots
1 large bunch Parsley (about 2 cups)
1/3 cup fresh Lemon Juice
1/3 cup Olive Oil
Salt & Pepper (to taste)

Peel the carrots.
In a food processor or box grater shred the carrots and place into a bowl.
De-stem the parsley and chop very finely then toss with the carrots.

For the Dressing:
Put the lemon juice, oil and salt and pepper into a jar, twist on the lid tightly and shake for at least 30 seconds or until the dressing is mixed well.

Toss half the dressing into the salad and taste, add more to your liking.
Refrigerate until ready to serve.

In trying to visualize and describe Demonic glyphs and sigils I would doodle them in my notebook. When I finished THE DARK STAR I had what amounted to an anthropologist’s field notebook on Demons. I thought I’d share and hopefully it adds to your enjoyment of THE DARK STAR!

P.S. Slight spoilers! If you haven’t finished THE DARK STAR then maybe save this until you have 🙂

The mysterious boy she steals a kiss from was not supposed to be Satan’s nephew, and there definitely should not be an ancient prophecy about her, especially one about eating her heart! They have the wrong girl! With no hope of rescue from her powerful magical family Clare must use her wits to escape Satan’s horrible plan.

Daniel Acer, the half human prince of the satanic bloodline, had no choice in his part of the dreadful scheme to claim Clare’s power. Torn between his demonic and human nature he faces the ultimate test of loyalty to his family. When the time for the sacrificial ceremony comes Daniel’s conscience torments him, as do his feelings for the courageous and beautiful Clare.

As political tensions and devious members of the royal family threaten to upend the balance of power, Clare and Daniel take the leap out of the frying pan and into the fires of Hell. They must return Clare home before the kingdom explodes into civil war.

Journeying up through the nine levels of Hell, they encounter dangerous landscapes and the temptations designed to entrap them as well as the demons and minions who might be able to help them, for a price of course.

Wedding season is upon us, I, in fact, am attending one this weekend. I used to panic slightly about what to wear on these occasions. (we shall never speak of the jumpsuit situation again)

Lately, I’ve come to realize if you have one cute summer dress, something that is breezy and flowy, you are all set.

In the writing of a story there are a lot of scenes that for one reason or another get cut out of the final manuscript. This is one of those scenes.

It was originally in the chapter where Stella pays a visit to her ex-boyfriend Jonathan and his now wife Clio. One of these days I’ll probably write the story of how Clio tracked Jonathan to Big Sur and post it in my Short Stories section here on the website.

Anyway, this is the scene in which Clio and Stella have a little girls only chat…

Enjoy!

OUTTAKE FROM THE DARK STAR!

“Well,” Stella said, a wicked gleam in her eyes, “before the epic Demonic beat down, there was one other thing I wanted to talk to you about.” She turned to Clio. “It’s of a personal nature, I was wondering if we could speak in private?”

“I…uh, of course. Would you like a tour of my studio while we…uh…”
“Excellent! I would love to see where all this magic happens.” Stella gestured to the painting of the Chrystal Cave.

Lady Stella gave Jonathan a hug in parting and her promise that they would visit again soon. Clio was glad to see the two of them at peace with the past. Jonathan had confessed his nervousness to her and had asked if she was okay with welcoming his old love here. Clio had laughed. From her point of view she owed Lady Stella a great debt.

Had she not ended her relationship with Jonathan that day twenty years ago he would have never thrown away the ring he had unknowingly enchanted with his deepest desires. The ring had found Clio, and Clio had used her gifts to track Jonathan. Smiling she toyed with that same ring now as it sat on her finger.

“…And I’ll bring Juno when I come next and you can show her the city!” Stella was saying to Ellie who hugged her tightly. “She will love that!”

Clio led the way to her studio. Hearty colorful grasses and rhododendron grew amongst the rocks lining the stairway down. Her studio was just a shack at the bottom of the rocky hillside their home sat upon but Clio was immensely proud of her little space. The grooved siding had faded to a silver patina, and the doorway, found at a salvage yard, was a carved masterpiece of vines, fruits and leaves.

“Jonathan and I built it together before Ellie came.” Clio opened the door for her guest. “Welcome.”
“How wonderful, and the view, my god!” Lady Stella walked to the picture window and looked out over the cliffside vista. The sheer drop on just the other side of the window afforded an unobscured view of the ocean’s churning waters as the waves dashed themselves upon the rocks below. “I can see where your inspiration comes from.”

“Thank you Lady…” she stopped herself, holding up her hands. “Just Stella. Sorry. One hundred-seventy years of ingrained servitude is hard to countermand.”

Stella nodded sadly. “I will never get used to, nor approve of, the near caste system of Faerie.”

As the child of servants Clio was only allowed to aspire to that which was her inherited station, she considered herself lucky to have found such a resplendent life in the Mortal realm.

“I have the feeling you wanted to speak to me regarding a matter you’d like to keep between us?” Clio asked, unable to quell her curiosity a moment longer.

“Yes, I…” She began then stopped; looking back out the window she seemed to be searching for words. “Well, you know I’m a halfling?”

Clio nodded, clueless as to what could be coming next.
“Have you and Jonathan… What I wanted to um…ask is,” she floundered again her cheeks flaming red. “And please, you can tell me if it’s none of my business, okay?”

“I assure you, whatever it is I’ll answer as truthfully as I can.”
“Okay. Right.” Stella cleared her throat. “Have you and Jonathan talked much about the disparity of your life spans?’

Clio could see now why Stella had been wary of broaching such a subject. It was a concern, one she and her husband had discussed recently in fact. Yes Faeries aged, though at a rate greatly slower than mortals. And before marrying Jonathan the goal of ‘growing old together’ was not a concept she’d been familiar with. Clio took a breath and sat on the stool in front of her large easel.

“To me he shall always be the beautiful young man who I tracked to the hiking trail in Big Sur,” she said toying with the turquoise ring on her left hand. “I had not realized our differences in that way bothered him so deeply until he brought it up recently.”
“You fought about it, didn’t you?”
“Yes. It makes him feel…” She shook her head. “But there’s nothing to be done but accept it.”
“What if I told you otherwise?”

Clio just blinked at her guest.
“Nox and I have a similar issue. As a full blooded Faerie like yourself Nox’s life span is much longer than mine as only a halfling.”
Clio nodded, with Stella so far. “Yes?”

“Nox and I have found a way to slow my aging and bringing my lifespan more in line with his.”
Clio’s jaw dropped open, she could feel her eyes bug. “Truly?”

“A warning though, I don’t know how it will affect someone who is totally Mortal like Jonathan.”
“Is it a spell?”
“It’s old magic,” Stella said. “Blood magic. The bond that is formed will affect you both.”
“Bonded by blood shed, forever tied until one is dead,” Clio recited.
“Yes.”

Clio’s thoughts whirled. Year by year her husband would grow older while she stayed physically the same and she could see it would be a problem as they went on. But blood magic was dangerous and the possibility that Jonathan, her heart, could come to harm was to be considered above all else. Though the chance to have not just years but hundreds of years together…

“What do I have to do?”
~~~
“What did you and Stella talk about?” Jonathan asked later that evening.
Clio padded into their bedroom, a glass of red wine in each hand. She climbed up onto their king size mattress and handed her husband a glass.
“Oh nothing,” she said. “Just girl talk.”
His dark eyes narrowed. “Uh huh, that’s what worries me.”
Clio laughed. “It was nice to see her?”
Jonathan looked into his glass, gazing into its pool of claret red. “She’s troubled. Her family could be in danger, and Nox is… Well he’s the Boogeyman for God’s sake! It’s not necessarily a life of peace for her, is it?”
“And you worry.” Clio added.
He nodded and sipped his wine. “Hey! What are you trying to pull here!”
“What?”
Jonathan held up his glass. “You know what!”
“I don’t!” Clio retorted.
“We were saving this bottle for our anniversary, remember?”
Clio shrugged. “I thought we would celebrate a month early. Things have
been…I don’t know.”
“Yeah, and I’m sorry,” he sighed. “I knew about our age difference going in and it’s not like you can help that you’re immortal.”
“If you could be too, would you?”
His expression was contemplative. “So long as I had you and Ellie, yeah I would.”
“I love you, my heart. My Cormeu.” She looked deep into his eyes and his body relaxed as he went into a trance. “Our bond by blood that I will shed shall be your life until I am dead.” She said the ancient spell in the Elder language of the Fae and the tender kiss she gave him sealed the magical bond between them.
Jonathan blinked his eyes dropping closed for a moment then he snapped awake again and smiled at his wife, unaware of the magic imposed upon him. Clio knew she’d have to confess someday, even in Hollywood a man who didn’t age would be noticed after awhile.
“Do I get any other early anniversary presents tonight?” he asked, wiggling his brows suggestively.
She looked up at him through her lashes. “Drink your wine first and you can have all the early presents you want.”
Jonathan downed his glassful in three hasty swallows then set it on his bedside table. Laughing, Clio jumped into his arms.
“Uh oh, what happened here?” he asked, holding up her bandaged forefinger.
“Um… pallet knife,” Clio said.
Jonathan brushed a kiss over her finger then into her palm.
“I want you to know that however long we have, a day, a year, or forever, I will never stop loving you, querida.”
“And I you,” Clio answered. “Forever.”
